He Knows Something You Don't | Matthew 9:18-26

Duh, He's the creator of the universe

Most of the humans I know have a desire to know things.

With the Internet and ChatGPT at our fingertips, we have access to knowledge that was previously unheard of.

But once those grooves in our tofu brains are formed, it’s often difficult to change what we believe. That’s why people fall into habits, it’s why we live in a divisive culture, and it’s why we often argue with the people we disagree with.

It’s hard to accept that what you “know” is wrong.

18 While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples. 20 And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, 21 for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well. 23 And when Jesus came to the ruler's house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24 he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. 25 But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went through all that district.

Matthew 9:18-26

We come back to this passage to discuss the other healing account in the story.

The ruler came to Jesus out of his desperation to save his daughter, but also out of his faith that Jesus could heal her and bring her back to life.

But when they get to the house, there are mourners already there making a commotion. It was common practice back in those days to hire professional mourners when a member of your family passed.

Perhaps it was reasonable for them to laugh at Jesus when He told them that the ruler’s daughter was only sleeping.

But they didn’t have the faith that the ruler did.

They were too set in their ways. Set in the comfort of their worldview.

They didn’t know Jesus.

They didn’t know that the giver of life was standing in front of them.

And they were proven wrong. The man they laughed at brought a girl back to life.

There may be times in your life when Jesus is in front of you and wants to bring you back to life.

The only question is, do you have faith that He can?

I hope you do. And if not, I hope you get to know Him.

It’s the greatest gift and privilege.

Have a blessed Wednesday, friends.
