Infinite Grace | Matthew 5:17-20

Surely goodness and mercy follow me all my days

Have you ever heard someone describe God as if there are 2 versions of Him?

As in there’s the Old Testament God of wrath and anger, and the New Testament God of grace and mercy.

It’s something that contributes to people not reading much of the Old Testament nowadays.

But if you were to really pay attention to what Jesus says, it’s pretty clear that He sometimes takes it to the next level too.

17  “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18  For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19  Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20  For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:17-20

Yes, Jesus came to fulfill the law, which means that some of the Old Testament laws (such as the sacrifices and worshipping in the Tabernacle) aren’t necessary anymore.

But that doesn’t mean that the Law is to be ignored. Jesus’ sacrifice doesn’t give us a free pass to ignore the Old Testament. God’s Law remains God’s Law. And it remains good.

Yes, Christ came to save us in His infinite love and mercy. But that came through the Law of the Old Testament. God poured out His love for us from the very first words of the Bible until the very last.

That’s why the entire Bible is so important, not just the New Testament. And that’s why we ought to read it.

Have a blessed Monday, my friends.

Love y’all.
